Qiviut Organ Pipe Scarf

In the knitting community, qiviut yarn (that is, yarn spun from the underwool of an arctic muskox) is considered one of the finest luxury fibers.  It’s both warmer and softer than angora while still being very lightweight, and much easier to work with.  Be warned however:  The price tag on this is not for the faint of heart.  A single skein can set you back $100.

The organ pipes design was chosen for this project for 2 reasons.  First, it tends to be a “long” stitch, which helps to make the most of the 100-or-so yards that come in a skein.  Second, the organ pipes cause horizontal folds in the scarf, which makes it even thicker and more cold resistant.

Materials:

  • 1 Skein Qiviut Yarn (about 160 yards, lace weight)
  • Extraneous Qiviut Wool Remnants (optional, may come free with some qiviut yarn orders)
  • Size 1 Knitting Needles

Instructions:

Note:  I made this scarf before I started the blog, so unfortunately there aren’t any pictures of the actual knitting process.  If you want to see what casting on, knitting, or purling looks like, you may want to look at one of my other knitting projects or find a youtube video, especially if you have never knit before.  Also, if you have any scrap fiber that you’re adding to the scarf, be sure to add it to the ends of the scarf in a somewhat-symmetrical way.image
